Core

Our custom lecture series designed to educate newcomers and those looking to supplement their studies of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Cognitive Science! Here we provide you with intuitions and practical understandings – enabling you to apply what you learn to research, industry, and your projects.

The goal of Core is to dip your toes into a variety of topics and prepare you to move into our other, more advanced groups soon after. We expect you to attend as many meetings as possible and chunk out a few hours – roughly 5-10 every week in addition to these meetings – to become successful.

The material here has been the Core of AI@UCF since since Felix Sosa, John Muchovej, and Richard DiBacco reworked the structure of the club at UCF. As the university doesn’t provide such coursework until your final semesters in degree programs, we created Core as a stand-in, to cultivate your skills for research and industry before you graduate.

We’re continuing to offer most of our Fall 2019 selection, but are giving some new topics a try, namely Time Series and Attention. While that means we don’t cover topics like Computational Cognitive Science this semester, we’re building out our collection of lecture-workshops. This semester’s focus also centers around thoroughly developing the interactive components of our lecture-workshops.

This semester we continued polishing our material - focusing on cultivating group interaction and working to solidify your understanding of the topics we’re covering. We also introduced Deep Reinforcement Learning and Computational Cognitive Science as topics to move us towards a broader understanding of both cutting-edge research and the begin moving us back to our goals of covering Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Cognitive Science.

This semester we took a step back to broaden our view of machine learning. We looked at older (but still capable) statistical tools and incorporated more of the deep learning stack to give you the tools to participate in many of the research groups at UCF and abroad focused on machine learning.

We’ve made some modifications to the content and polished the lecture-workshops, while still sticking true to our deep-learning and reinforcement-learning focus. We added both Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Networks to our content, with a focus on a deeper technical understanding.

Our first offering of Core. We started out with a history of neural networks and learned to implement them, from sratch. We then delved into Reinforcement Learning and further explored Evolutionary Computation.
